What is a Gastroenterologist?

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine concerned with diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract or digestive system. The digestive system includes the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines as well as the liver, pancreas and gallbladder.

Your Gastroenterologist is an Internal Medicine Doctor who has specialized training and experience in diagnosing and treating Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases. This training begins after a physician has completed a three year Internal Medicine Residency and is eligible for a Fellowship in Gastroenterology that will continue for an additional 2-3 years. During their training, Gastroenterologists receive expert instruction in Upper Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

At Acadiana Gastroenterology Associates, our Gastroenterologists are Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Board Certification indicates that our Doctors have met rigorous standards in training and education and successfully completed a comprehensive Board Certification exam.
